Radical Idea for ROAR, ban tire sauce for off road

Watch that video. I mean really watch it. 1992 and look at that track. That’s off road racing. Those cars completely sucked compared to todays machines. Today’s off road tracks resemble on road. Clean high grip surfaces with a few jumps put in. I can’t even imagine what today’s racers would do if they came to a track and it looked like this on from the 19992 Reedy race. Have we become a bunch of wimps and can...

Comp Crawling: Future of off-road racing?

Searching YouTube for something new and fun in the world of RC I ran across a video of “Comp crawler racing”. I laughed at this after watching the first lap but not how you think. It actually looks like fun. Tracks laid out with all kinds of obstacles and stuff to cross as well as trying to be the fastest guy around the track. Replacing a normal groomed clay off-road track with dirt, rocks, and wood I would think there is...

Does anyone club race anymore?

I’ve noticed a trend in our area, and i’m not sure it’s a good thing. The death of club racing! Everyone is having a series of big race. In the NW you can have some sort of “big” race or points series race every weekend and some weeknights. I also see normal club racing dwindling and some of the racers only showing up for the big races. It’s sad really. What used to be amazing racing every...

To Mid or not to Mid

This is one of the biggest questions in RC racing. Should I switch to mid motor? With this years World Champion Kyosho/Orion driver Jared Tebo winning with a mid, why not? When I first saw all the big drivers switching to mid motor, I personally thought it was a fad. At the very least, I thought it was because they were racing at all the world class racing facilities with superior traction. There is no way that mid motor will...

Is this really what it has come to?

The current IFMAR worlds warm up race is going on this weekend, and once again a track has decided to pour pounds and pounds of sugar on the dirt track to give more traction to the racers. (insert said Def Leppard song here) First the Cactus Classic and now this. When will this ridiculousness end? It’s called OFF road people!! Offroad means it is run off the road, that means on dirt and there might not be perfect traction....

Why I Race

Why I Race

Last nights club race at Top Gear Hobbies in the Northwest, gave me a reminder of why I love RC racing. My son started racing 3 years ago, when he was 8. In that time, he has gone from novice and hitting the pipes every few feet, to hitting them once a lap, then to once a race. After winning a few novice races, it was time for him to move up to stock. Starting with stock SC, then stock truck, and finally stock buggy. After a summer of...

Future of off road racing in PDX

With the closing of PRCR, one has to ponder the situation in Portland. There is a great thread started on rctech about just this, with people throwing around some ideas. You can check it out here There is a huge racing community here that is just clamoring to be asked to help out. Just three short years ago, you had to get to the track several hours early to get a pit spot. I have my own opinion on what went wrong, but this is not the...
